There are a variety of online tools to help you determine what keywords drive traffic, as well as what keywords might be the most competitive. Many of these tools are free, but some do have paid options that give you access to even more data.
A couple extremely popular and valuable free resources are the Google Keyword Planner and Wordtracker. Google Trends is also free and can show you the popularity of terms over time to show you if something is trending up or down.
A couple paid options that we use for Get Found First clients include Moz, SEMrush and SpyFu. These tools can give you a very real sense of the keywords you should be using on your website and in your paid online advertising.
How Can I Use Keywords?
You want to create content around keywords that is relevant to your business and the words and phrases that your ideal customer or client would use in their internet search queries. Here are a few ways to use keywords to help improve your search engine optimization (SEO):
• Use keywords in your Meta Tag located in the head section of the page’s html code.
• Use keywords in the Title and Meta Description of the page this is where search engines find out what the page is about.
• Use keywords throughout the content of your page, but avoid over usage also known as “keyword stuff” as this man be detrimental.
• Remember search engines generally give more weight to the first 200 words of a page, so be sure your keywords are there.
• It can be beneficial to use keywords in headings and anchor text (link text). Search engines recognize this as showing added importance.
• Consider using keywords in your Alt Attributes so images are indexed by Google.
Basically, keywords are what makes it easy for search engines like Google to know exactly what your website and the pages on your website are all about. Google will reward you with increased organic rankings when your keywords are relevant to your website content which will make it easier for potential customers to find you above your competition online.
